Kolej WIT was founded by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) of Malaysia in April 1977.

The TWU which foresaw the need to upgrade the skills of Malaysians in keeping with a nation on the fast track towards developed country status, established the institute as part of its objective to promote the educational, cultural and social pursuit of its members.

Setting up the institute was no means feat, considering the fact the entire capital for Kolej WIT were mostly from TWU – a union which derived much of its funds from its members, the majority comprising mainly ordinary employees in the transportation industry.

KOLEJ WIT - Ipoh Campus was set up in the northern region in 1986. Since then it has expanded in the focus of providing the best technical education in the region.
